Bringing Mahjong, Calligraphy, and Cuisine to MCI Students
The second "Chinese Corner" event for this semester was successfully held on Thursday afternoon, May 25, 2023. Students and faculty gathered to experience the diverse and rich Chinese culture. The aim of this event was to promote cultural exchange among members who participate in “Online Chinese Classroom” through a series of engaging offline activities, including learning to play Mahjong, practicing calligraphy, and savoring authentic Chinese cuisine.
Upon entering the event venue, everyone was enticed by the traditional Chinese dishes. The menu consisted of a variety of flavors, catering to both meat-eaters and vegetarians, ensuring that everyone could find delectable dishes to suit their taste. While enjoying the food, attendees also had the opportunity to appreciate traditional Chinese music, creating a perfect atmosphere throughout the evening.
One of the highlights of the event was the Mahjong workshop, where the Chinese teacher Yiqiao Wang and Wei Wang from China Center showcased and explained the intricate techniques of this ancient Chinese game through a video presentation. Mahjong, a tile-based game originating from the Qing Dynasty, has evolved over centuries to become a beloved game for millions of Chinese worldwide. This workshop provided a unique opportunity for participants to understand the rules, strategies, and cultural significance of the game. Immersed in friendly Mahjong practice, everyone had a firsthand experience of the essence of Mahjong.
Following the Mahjong workshop, another captivating activity was the calligraphy workshop, where participants embarked on exploring the art of Chinese calligraphy. By watching videos demonstrating various techniques by calligraphers, everyone witnessed the graceful strokes that brought Chinese characters to life. With guidance, participants also learned to hold a brush pen correctly and practice brushstrokes on paper. The calligraphy workshop not only taught the attendees the fundamentals of calligraphy but also allowed them to appreciate the patience, focus, and creativity behind this ancient art form.
Throughout the evening, the "Chinese Corner" event created a warm and relaxed atmosphere that encouraged everyone to communicate and share their experiences. Participants expressed their appreciation for the immersive and hands-on approach to understanding Chinese culture. Such events serve as a bridge for cultural exchange and demonstrate MCI's commitment to providing enriching experiences and broadening horizons for students, inspiring them to further explore and appreciate diverse cultures.
The "Chinese Corner" event provided an opportunity for students to engage with Chinese culture and laid the foundation for future cultural activities on campus. All participants eagerly look forward to the next China event.
